Energy Victories: Commonwealth LNG Gets Final DOE Approval; US LNG Exports Hit Record High Thanks to Plaquemines LNG

Louisiana’s energy sector recently scored two major victories that demonstrate the power of free markets over government interference. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) granted final permit approval for the Commonwealth Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) export terminal in Cameron Parish, while U.S. LNG exports hit an all-time record of 9.33 million metric tons in August—driven largely by Louisiana’s own Plaquemines LNG facility.

Free Markets Deliver Results

The Commonwealth LNG approval represents a multi-billion-dollar vote of confidence in Louisiana’s energy future. This project will generate thousands of construction jobs and create lasting economic opportunities while cementing Louisiana’s role as America’s LNG export hub.

Meanwhile, Plaquemines LNG is already proving what happens when regulatory roadblocks are removed and energy projects are allowed to move forward. Since beginning operations in December 2024, the facility has rapidly scaled up production, contributing 1.6 million tons—a remarkable 17% of America’s total August LNG exports. As Plaquemines completes commissioning of all 18 liquefaction units by September, these numbers are expected to climb even higher. This success story reinforces America’s position as the world’s leading LNG exporter and showcases Louisiana as the epicenter of this energy renaissance.

Fighting Federal Overreach

These victories didn’t happen by accident. In 2024, the Pelican Center for Justice partnered with the Liberty Justice Center to file Oil & Gas Workers Association v. Biden, challenging the previous Administration’s unlawful ban on new LNG export permits. This regulatory roadblock threatened the livelihoods of more than 47,000 American energy workers and violated the Natural Gas Act. The DOE’s recent approvals and the resulting export surge vindicate our legal challenge. When government gets out of the way, Louisiana’s energy sector thrives—creating jobs, generating investment, and strengthening America’s position as a reliable energy supplier to our allies.

The Path Forward

Commonwealth LNG and Plaquemines LNG represent more than successful projects—they’re proof that market-driven energy development, not government regulation, delivers prosperity for Louisiana families and communities.

At the Pelican Institute, we’ll continue fighting government overreach and championing policies that unleash Louisiana’s energy potential. Louisiana families and entrepreneurs don’t need more bureaucrats telling them how to succeed—they just need government to get out of the way.
