Minnesotans face an extra $1 billion – $164 per person – in property taxes in 2026

The bite

People across Minnesota will be receiving their truth-in-taxation notices pretty soon, if they haven’t already. According to preliminary Department of Revenue estimates, all told Minnesotans will be told to cough up an extra $948.2 million in property taxes in 2026. That comes to an extra $164 per Minnesotan, or $655 for a family of four.

This is a 6.9% increase on 2025’s statewide average. For comparison, Minnesota Management and Budget’s most recent Budget & Economic Forecast from February 2025 forecasts a rate of inflation of 3.0% in 2026; less than half the rate of the property tax hike.

Cities could see around an 8.7% increase, counties 8.1%, townships 5.6%, schools 5.8%, and special districts 4.6%.

The good news is that, by law, the final figures cannot be higher than this but can be lower. Indeed, last year, preliminary estimates were for a statewide hike of 6.0%, but this fell to 5.6% in the final totals. Even so, this represents a further hit to affordability in Minnesota.
