Valuable context uncovered in Minneapolis ICE shooting

Impressive reporting has provided valuable context surrounding the fatal shooting of Renee Good, 37, in South Minneapolis by an ICE agent.

Good was a member of Mn ICE Watch

The New York Post has published an article that details the fact that Renee Good and her wife Rebecca were members of Mn Ice Watch, an organization dedicated to locating, responding to, and disrupting ICE enforcement.  Renee and Rebecca’s actions that led up to the shooting appear consistent with the actions of organized anti-ICE activists.

The Goods were actively following and interfering with ICE enforcement the morning of the shooting, using their car to impede the movements of ICE. This directly contradicts early reporting that Renee Good had just dropped her child off at school when ICE agents approached her for no reason.

National Review has done an examination of MN Ice Watch’s social media site.  They report the following:

“On a tab titled ‘Education,’ the account promotes information about how to ‘de-arrest’ individuals who have been arrested by law-enforcement by “physically removing an arrestee from a law enforcement officer’s grips, opening the door of a car or pressuring law enforcement officers to release an arrestee.” The ‘de-arrest primer’ goes on to describe the benefits of blocking police vehicles.

‘If you don’t have a crowd asserting pressure there may be some interference charges that come with blocking a police vehicle that may be more easily handed down for only one or two people blocking a police vehicle, but in many cases these are misdemeanor offenses and catch and release,’ the primer notes.”

Involved agent’s cell phone video of the incident

Alpha News obtained video of the incident recorded from the cell phone carried by the agent who shot Good.  The video, taken from the perspective of the agent, shows what he saw as he got out of his truck and walked around the Good vehicle which was parked perpendicularly on Portland Ave, partially blocking ICE vehicles and other traffic.

The agent who didn’t speak, walked around the Good’s car documenting Renee Good in the driver seat and Rebecca Good standing out in the street filming the agent while she antagonized him verbally. Whistles, sirens, and other taunts are prevalent in the audio.

The agent began to re-enter his truck when two other agents that had been blocked in by the Goods got out of their truck and demanded Renee Good get out of her truck. The agent then got out of his truck and began walking around the front of the Good’s car to assist the other agents. Rebecca Good yelled for Renee to “drive, drive!” The video captures Renee Good facing directly forward facing the agent in front of her car. She then begins to drive forward striking the agent and pushing him abruptly to the right of the car.  The audio reflects the strike, a grunt from the agent, and the gunshots.

Reporting from the NY post indicates Rebecca Good was on the curb crying after the shooting, saying “I made her come down here; it’s my fault.”

The involved ICE agent had recently been injured after being dragged 50 yards by suspect’s car

Several sources including MPR news have identified the involved agent as Jonathan Ross, 43, a former Army veteran who served in Iraq, and who has served as an ICE agent since 2007.

Ross was reportedly injured in Bloomington in June 2025 while attempting to arrest a man for immigration violations. The man refused to get out of his car, and when Ross and others attempted to forcibly remove him the man put the car in gear and took off trapping Ross’s arm in the car and dragging him 50 yards.  Ross required 30 stitches and treatment for other injuries.

Takeaways

These revelations provide important context to the incident. We must be reminded that this is just a portion of the information that will make up the complete investigation. Federal authorities investigating the incident and assessing whether the use of force was appropriate will be in a far better place to make a proper decision, than any of us who are relying on a handful of videos and news reports.
