CTU-backed candidates lose 8 of 13 contested races

As Illinois’ election results roll in, candidates endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union are losing most of their contested races.

Candidates backed by the Chicago Teachers Union lost most of the races Tuesday in which they faced competitors.

With nearly 90% of votes counted , CTU-endorsed candidates trailed in eight of 13 races in which they were challenged.

CTU didn’t just endorse candidates — the union was a major donor. CTU endorsed another 13 candidates who had no primary opponent.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who won re-election, didn’t seek CTU’s endorsement. Right before the primary, CTU favorability hit a record-low among likely Chicago voters.

This election marks the most congressional vacancies for Illinois in nearly 80 years, with five open U.S. House seats and one in the U.S. Senate.
