Two charged in Anoka Co. welfare fraud

Anoka County couple charged in $800K public benefits fraud probe.

The exact dollar amount involved was $861,304.03, according to state officials. Fox 9 reports,

Charges filed against an Anoka County husband and wife on Thursday accuse the duo of public-assistance fraud.

Both 52-year-old Mohamed Metwalli Elshazli and 63-year-old Magda Mahmoud Elsagher are facing one count of wrongfully obtaining assistance and one count of perjury in any writing under oath.

The programs involved were reportedly Medical Assistance and SNAP. As indicated, these are state (not federal) charges.

Swag reportedly includes cash, cars, jewelry and international travel.

Numerous deposits into and payments from the account were allegedly noted, including international wire transfers out of it that totaled $2,220,753.13 from September 2021 through July 2025.
