MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — The App Store Accountability Act passed the Alabama Senate with a unanimous vote on Feb. 5. The bill is focused on online safety for children and teens by requiring parental approval for kids to download apps from the App Store, which you can read about in more detail here.
The Alabama Policy Institute says that 80% of information teens access comes from phone apps. The App Store Accountability Act, which passed the Alabama House of Representatives last month on Jan. 22, would allow parents to limit their children’s chances of exposure to inappropriate content.
“If the House concurs, Alabama will the fourth state to pass this law, but it won’t be the last,” said President & CEO of the Alabama Policy Institute Stephanie Smith. “As the mother of seven children, I am truly thankful to the sponsors of this bill, to the leadership of the Alabama Legislature and to the membership of the House and Senate for the unanimous votes to pass the App Store Accountability Act. Alabama parents deserve to have the right tools to protect their kids online. This bill gives them the ability to do just that.”
