With most property taxes going to local public schools, Illinois parents and taxpayers should know how well third- through eighth-grade students read and perform math at local public school districts compared to the cost per student.
In Illinois, 6-of-10 third through eighth graders couldn’t read at grade level in 2024 on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. Seven-of-10 couldn’t perform math proficiently.
That came at a cost averaging $15,902 per student.
About two-thirds of that money came from property taxes. Illinoisans pay the nation’s highest rate, averaging $4,584 per home.
