Letter of support: Make Mining American Again

Yesterday, the House subcommittee on energy and mineral resources heard testimony on six mining bills that will help to Make Mining American Again. Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08), chairman of the subcommittee, introduced his bill, H.R. 4090, to identify priority mining projects and regulations hindering domestic mining, evaluate the potential of federal lands and initiate detailed geologic mapping, and analyze the economic impacts of relying on China for minerals.

During the hearing, Chairman Stauber read into the record a letter of support from American Experiment. Our letter reiterates the importance of Minnesota’s mineral resources in meaningfully reducing U.S. reliance on foreign sources of minerals and H.R. 4090’s pivotal role in doing so.

Debra Struhsacker, coauthor of American Experiment’s October 2024 report Mission Impossible, was invited to testify on behalf of the Women’s Mining Coalition, which she cofounded in 1993. She expertly fielded questions from Rep. Stauber (MN-08), Rep. Downing (MT-02), and Rep. Begich (AK-At Large). Her full written testimony is a wealth of information on several of the bills considered in the hearing.

Ms. Struhsacker testified that, “Three decades of unfavorable policies have discouraged private-sector investment in U.S. mineral exploration and development and hollowed out the mining sector. Today’s minerals emergency is a direct result of neglecting the importance of maintaining a strong domestic mining industry capable of providing essential minerals.”
