Minnesota’s sanctuary status

The state of Minnesota once again appears on an official list of illegal alien sanctuary states, along with eleven (11) other states and the District of Columbia.

This latest list was published last week by the U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ). An earlier, more comprehensive (but preliminary) list was published by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) back in May. That list included Minnesota as a state along with a number of individual counties and the state’s two largest cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. No individual Minnesota city or county appears on the updated DOJ list.

The Hill newspaper is reporting on the DOJ’s use of the list,

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday she was ramping up pressure on 32 “sanctuary jurisdictions,” urging them to comply with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

“I just sent Sanctuary City letters to 32 mayors around the country and multiple governors saying, you better be abiding by our federal policies and with our federal law enforcement, because if you aren’t, we’re going to come after you,” she told a Fox News reporter.

It is not yet known whether Gov. Tim Walz has received such a letter from Bondi. She has given recipients a week to respond.

KTTC-TV (Rochester) reports that Gov. Walz continues to deny that Minnesota is a sanctuary state, quoting the Gov.’s office,

The governor’s spokesperson said Wednesday [Aug. 6], “[The governor] talked about this extensively, including at that congressional hearing, and made clear that Minnesota is not a sanctuary state.”

The governor consistently wants to have it both ways. When speaking to partisan audiences, he emphasizes the state’s lack of cooperation with, if not outright impediment to, immigration authorities. When called to account, he denies the state has any sanctuary policies or status.

Now comes the time for choosing.
