From the Worchester (MA) Telegram & Gazette,
Bipartisan New England governors form pact to grow nuclear energy.
The Telegram reports,
All New England governors issued a joint statement March 31 saying they would be exploring advanced nuclear energy technology. Healey, Lamont, Mills and McKee are Democrats, while Ayotte and Scott are Republicans. The governors are looking to find new sites for nuclear facilities in states and communities “that express a willingness to host such resources.”
Meanwhile, back in Minnesota, MPR News reports,
Lawmakers want Minnesota to study possibility of building new nuclear plants.
Baby steps. From MPR,
Advocates for nuclear energy hope this is the year Minnesota takes a step toward lifting its 32-year-old moratorium on new nuclear power plants in the state.
A coalition of utilities, counties, clean energy groups and labor unions known as the Minnesota Nuclear Energy Alliance is pushing the Legislature to reconsider the ban.
MPR News reminds us,
Currently, Minnesota has a moratorium on new nuclear plants. The Legislature enacted it in 1994, as part of a compromise to allow Xcel Energy to store nuclear waste at its Prairie Island plant near Red Wing.
As MPR explains,
As a first step toward opening the door to new nuclear energy in Minnesota, some state lawmakers are backing a bill authorizing a study of the potential to build new nuclear plants, including small, modular reactors that are currently in development in the U.S.
American Experiment is promoting a parallel effort to the Alliance push for repealing the nuclear ban under our “Free the Nukes” campaign.
The state legislature has only about six weeks left in its 2026 regular session. Fingers crossed.
