Use the table below to look up how much your local superintendent cost taxpayers last year.
Illinois’ highest-paid school district superintendent received $537,197 last year to lead a district where only 19% of the roughly 2,000 students could read proficiently and 7% perform math at grade level.
That compares to statewide elementary averages of 41% reading proficiency and 28% in math.
Nearly half of Illinois’ 866 school districts serve only one or two schools. Taxpayers could save by consolidating school districts – merging administrative overhead without closing any schools or taking away any principals.
Illinois in 2018 spent $1.19 billion on general administration – the highest amount in the nation and about one-third more than California, which educated about three times as many students.
