Senate Bill 1327 — Precinct committeemen (+1)

Bill Description: Senate Bill 1327 would clarify that political parties may impose requirements to serve as a precinct committeeman beyond those found in statute.

Rating: +1

Does it in any way restrict public access to information related to government activity or otherwise compromise government transparency, accountability, or election integrity? Conversely, does it increase public access to information related to government activity or increase government transparency, accountability, or election integrity?

Senate Bill 1327 would amend Section 34-624, Idaho Code, which deals with the qualifications for precinct committeemen. It would add a new subsection that says, “A political party may add additional qualifications for such party’s precinct committeemen that are not in conflict with the provisions of this section.”

While this language is more of a clarification that current practices are, in fact, legal, it does appropriately recognize that the political parties, as private organizations, have the right to set their own standards for who is eligible to serve as a precinct committeeman.
