The Latin Kings play songs of love

From the New York Post,

Violent Latin Kings gangbanger allegedly stole body armor, weapons from FBI during Minneapolis protests.

That news came directly from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, not from any local source. The Post reports,

Raul Gutierrez, 33, was arrested Thursday after multiple federal vehicles were destroyed and defaced by unruly agitators the night prior.

The alleged perp, who was identified by Fox News, is a “known member” of the violent Latin Kings gang, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Post includes a mugshot with their story,

The Post adds,

It wasn’t immediately clear what weapons he allegedly stole or what he was charged with.

In fact, I can’t find any indication that he has been charged with anything.

Speaking of Latin, here’s a phrase for you: habeas corpus. It’s literal meaning is “that you have the body.” In legal terms, it’s a petition to bring an arrestee before a judge for the purpose of securing their release from custody.

It’s a civil action, where a lawyer seeks to achieve a goal more easily accomplished via that method than through the underlying criminal case. In a habeas case, the government (representing the people) are the defendants and have next to no rights in the civil case.

Court filings are done in secret, with the public barred from reading.

As of this morning (January 16), 200 habeas petitions have been filed in Federal District Court in Minnesota since the beginning of the calendar year. That number represents 56 percent of all the 360 civil cases filed with the court in 2026.

Expressed a different way, in 2025, it took until January 30 before we reached civil case No. 360, of all types.

The flood of habeas cases shows that lawyers for the illegal aliens believe (for very good reason) that they will win in district court, whereas they would have little chance in immigration court. The mostly liberal federal district judges are eager to release any and all illegal aliens in custody.

I ran across this headline yesterday from ABC News,

Appeals court says judge had no jurisdiction to order Mahmoud Khalil’s release

The case is from New Jersey and involves a green card holder arrested by ICE. ABC reports,

U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz issued an order on June 20 granting Khalil’s release on bail after determining that he presented neither a danger nor a flight risk and that extraordinary circumstances justified his temporary release while his habeas case proceeded.

The plot twist,

On Thursday, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered Judge Farbiarz to dismiss a petition Khalil had filed challenging his detention, on the grounds that Farbiarz lacked jurisdiction in the case.

Wut? That word hasn’t filtered back to Minnesota (which lies within a different circuit). Local judges in Minnesota believe that not only do they have the jurisdiction to release ICE detainees but have a moral obligation to do so.

Something’s gotta give.
