Pine Tree Pulse, Episode 76: Jonathan Bush

Jonathan Bush, Republican candidate for governor of Maine, recently sat down with Maine Policy CEO Matt Gagnon and Policy Analyst Harris Van Pate at MPI headquarters to discuss the 2026 gubernatorial campaign, and his story.

Bush is a technology entrepreneur, best known as the cofounder and former chief executive officer of athenahealth, a healthcare technology company he founded in 1997. He is also (obviously) a member of a very famous and influential political family, well known to those of us in Maine.

We discuss his personal history, including his business ventures, service in the military, personal challenges, and his reasons for jumping in the governor’s race. We also talk about the state’s spending addiction, the broken healthcare market, explosive housing costs, energy and our failing education system.

This interview is the sixth in a series of interviews that Maine Policy Institute is conducting with those seeking to be elected governor of Maine. If you missed our prior conversations with Bobby CharlesJim LibbyDavid JonesOwen McCarthy, or Ben Midgley make sure you head to our interview archive to catch up on them today.

Maine Policy Institute does not endorse candidates or involve itself in political campaigns. We are bringing you conversations like this so you may better understand the priorities of individuals who seek powerful positions in Maine’s government.
