Study finds that Minnesotans get a worse return on their taxes than in 36 other states

Gov. Tim Walz has been a fan of Wallethub’s work, including its recent raking of Minnesota as the second-best state to raise a family.

He did not, however, see fit to share their more recent ranking of “States with the Best & Worst Taxpayer ROI (2026).”

“To determine the states with the best taxpayer ROI,” the authors explain, “WalletHub contrasted state and local tax collections with the quality of the services residents receive in each of the 50 states. Our data set includes a total of 29 key metrics.”

Sadly, they find that Minnesota ranks 37th out of 50 states.

Earlier this week, I noted that the average earner pays more state tax in Minnesota than in 42 other states. According to one of the governor’s favorite “rankers,” Minnesotans are not seeing much bang for their tax bucks.
