The Malaise In China Today
Two years ago this month, a rider died while napping between deliveries on his electric bike in Hangzhou, the bustling capital of Zhejiang province. Surnamed Yuan, he was known as the “Order King” for grueling 18-hour days. He died from exhaustion.
Yuan’s death sparked outrage. “He was in his 50s, the sole breadwinner of his family, working day and night,” one online poster noted. “May he rest in peace. I hope in his next life, he will not have to race against time like this.”
In this life, gig workers like Yuan know they can’t stop. More important, they know they have no future.
