‘Judicially authorized search warrant’

From Fox News,

Federal agents raid Ilhan Omar’s DC home amid immigration fraud investigation:

Omar is being investigated over her immigration paperwork.

The key sentences in the story are a quote from federal authorities,

Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.

That’s the key: a federal judge signed off on the search warrant. Most likely, the signer was a federal magistrate judge in the District of Columbia. He or she would have been hired by the heavily-Democratic cohort of judges in the district. That magistrate judge has placed his or her career on the line in signing that warrant. To gain that signature, the judge would have to be convinced that probable cause exists that a federal crime was committed.

As a matter of course, that warrant would have been filed under seal. So, there’s no need to speculate on what this is all about, it has been recorded in the affidavit.

This New York Post story on the federal raid includes some details in the Ilhan Omar backstory, including,

Omar has long been dogged by allegations that she married her brother in order to help him secure a US visa or student loans — though sources indicated that Monday’s raid didn’t appear to be tied to those accusations.

Omar and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, were married in 2009. They divorced in 2017.

For those interested, a few years ago, I compiled a list of articles on the brother-marriage controversy.

Likewise, the Post reports.

Meanwhile, the controversial lawmaker has faced questions about alleged tax discrepancies, after a 2019 Minnesota state campaign finance board found that she filed joint tax returns with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her children, in 2014 and 2015 — while she was still legally married to her first husband.

The state Campaign Finance Board found Omar guilty of these accusations and fined her campaign $3,500.
